...DECEMBER AT ROCHESTER MN WAS COLDER THAN NORMAL...WHILE THE
PRECIPITATION WAS ABOVE NORMAL...AND WAS THE 9TH SNOWIEST DECEMBER
The average temperature for December was 18.4 degrees, which was 1.3
degrees below normal. The average high temperature was 24.6 degrees
...while the average low was 12.3 degrees. The highest temperature
for December was 39 degrees on the 26th, while the lowest reading
for the month was 25 degrees below zero which occurred on the 18th.
A total of 2.07 inches of precipitation fell during the month
...which was was 0.84 inches above normal. The greatest
precipitation was 0.60 inches which fell on the 25th.
There was 19.7 inches of snow recorded in December...which was 7.2
inches above normal and ranked as the 9th snowiest on record. The
greatest 24 hour snowfall of 8.2 inches fell from the 10th to the
9th snowiest December on Record.
The month was marked by a significant cold period that ran from the
7th to the 19th, then transitioning to a warm period that ran from
the 20th to the 31st. The coldest day was on the 18th when the high
only reached 2 below zero. Temperatures then warmup for Christmas
which averaged a temperature of 34 degrees, allowing it to rank with
Christmas 1959 and 1954 for the 3rd warmest on record. This warm
temperature also set the stage for 0.60 inches of rain, making it
the 3rd wettest Christmas on record.
...LOOKING AHEAD TO JANUARY...
January is the coldest month of the year with an average temperature
of 15.7 degrees. The average high is 23.6 degrees and the average
low is 7.7 degrees. The average daily high temperature starts at
24degrees, then dips to 23 degrees by the second week, and then
ends up at 25 on the 31st. The average low temperature is 9 degrees
on the 1st...then drops to 7 degrees above zero by mid month, then
end up at 8 degrees on the 31st. Normal precipitation for
January is 0.85 inches with 12.0 inches of snow.
