...SUMMARY...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOUNT HOLLY NJ HAS CONFIRMED A
MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ NEAR WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP IN
LEHIGH COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA ON JUNE 30 2015.

A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SURVEY TEAM ACCOMPANIED THE LEHIGH COUNTY
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS TO ASSESS DAMAGE IN WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP.
NUMEROUS TREES WERE DOWNED IN THE TOWNSHIP WITH DEBRIS SPREAD ACROSS THE
REGION. MANY ROADS WERE IMPASSABLE DUE TO THE DOWNED TREES. THE MAYOR OF
WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR THE TOWNSHIP ADVISING
RESIDENTS TO STAY OFF THE ROADS DUE TO THE DAMAGE IN THE TOWNSHIP.

SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OCCURRED ALONG COLUMBIA STREET WHERE
LARGE SECTIONS OF CORN FIELDS WERE FLATTENED BY THE WINDS. MANY TREES WERE
UPROOTED AND/OR SNAPPED ACROSS THE DAMAGE PATH, INCLUDING SEVERAL ON THE
PROPERTY OF TATE FARM.

THE TREES AND THE CORN FIELDS WERE ALL BLOWN DOWN IN AN EASTERLY DIRECTION
INDICATING STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE AND NOT TORNADIC DAMAGE. IT APPEARS
THAT THE REPORTED FUNNEL CLOUDS DID NOT REACH THE GROUND.

THANK YOU TO THE LEHIGH COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, LOCAL
OFFICIALS AND RESIDENTS IN AND NEAR THE DAMAGE AREA FOR PROVIDED
ASSISTANCE WITH THE SURVEY.

THIS INFORMATION CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE AT
WEATHER.GOV/PHI.

FOR REFERENCE...
A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW
AREA OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS THAN
5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL
WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND
CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE. STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND
THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO
DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.
