The stronger storms have produced wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph. Despite cloudy skies for much of the day, this didn`t stop the eastern half of the state from climbing into the low to mid 90s with heat indices around 100 degrees. Western portions of the state were behind a cold front leaving temperatures in the mid 60s to mid 70s. Cloud cover and rain kept those lower values in the southwest corner. Ahead of the front, southerly winds had speeds of 5 to 10 mph while behind the front northerly to northeasterly winds had speeds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts near 30 mph. The shower and thunderstorm activity will continue to move in from the Desert Southwest for the overnight period bringing much needed rainfall to many locations in the Central Plains. There could be a strong to marginally severe storm with 60 mph winds and small hail possible. Overnight temperatures are forecast to fall to around 40 degrees in western Nebraska to the mid 70s in eastern Oklahoma as the cold front tracks east. Northerly winds are anticipated behind the front at speeds of 10 to 20 mph. Precipitation is anticipated to persist into Sunday; this combined with cooler air should result in temperatures from the lower 50s in eastern Colorado and western Kansas to the mid 70s in the far southeast corner of Kansas. Further south the cooler air will be further delayed meaning another day around 90 degrees. Northerly winds will have speeds of 10 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 35 mph. $$
