Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Western and Central Wyoming
National Weather Service Riverton WY
159 PM MDT Thu Jun 27 2024

.DISCUSSION...

...Yellowstone NP and Teton dispatch areas (includes fire weather
zones 140...414...415...and 416)...

An approaching low pressure system already kicked off
thunderstorms in the morning and early afternoon over the southern
areas. For the rest of the day, most likely to see storms over the
Wind Rivers and northern YNP. The storms are likely to produce
40+mph outflow with lightning and brief heavy rain. Otherwise, the
storms will quickly move east and bring in gusty and dry weather,
with warm today temperatures cooling for Friday. Friday is
expected to be dry, cooler, yet remain windy from the WNW. Warmer
and dry for the weekend.

...Cody dispatch area (includes fire weather zones 275...276...
282...283...285...286...287...288...and 289)...

Very warm and gusty conditions this afternoon should include
isolated showers and thunderstorms. Some storms in the Bighorn
Basin could produce 45+mph gusts with brief heavy rain and some
hail. The storms should move out of the dispatch area by
1900-2000. Winds will decrease around sunset. Friday should start
off dry and gusty yet cooler, with winds across northern WY
shifting to the north by 1500, and the north wind pushing into
central WY during the evening. Saturday and Sunday will be warmer
and drier, with Sunday seeing elevated conditions.

...Casper dispatch area (includes fire weather zones 277...278...
279...280...281...285...289...and 300)...

Some thunderstorms are already developed and moving across the
southern half of zone 279, likely with with gusty outflow wind
over 40 mph and frequent lightning. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms will continue through about 2000, moving west to
east, though some storms may continue over the south parts of zone
279 past midnight. Gusty winds of 20-25 mph and gusts 30-40 mph
should also continue most places through sunset, with some weaker
north winds in the northern parts of zone 281. Friday will be
drier and cooler with breezy gusty WNW wind. Some storms may
persist across south parts of zone 279 again. A cool front with
gusty north winds will move into zone 281 in the afternoon and
push into central WY during the early evening, and eventually into
southern WY. Saturday will be near normal temps and lighter winds,
with Sunday being even warmer, drier, and windier from the SW for
elevated fire weather conditions.

...Thunderstorms imply strong gusty and erratic winds...
...Haines Index is high level Haines both day and night...
