...August 2024 Was Warmer Than Normal Across East Central Florida...

Temperatures continued to be warmer than normal across east central
Florida in August, with monthly average temperature departures
around a half a degree to 2 degrees above normal. This ranked August
2024 within the top 15 warmest on record at all primary climate
sites, and most notably it was the 3rd warmest August on record for
Daytona (tying August 2016). Rainfall for August varied across east
central Florida. Totals for the month were near to above normal
across the northern interior, with near to below normal rainfall
totals for the rest of east central Florida. A significant portion
of the total monthly rainfall across the northern interior occurred
during the earlier part of the August, as the outer rainbands of
Hurricane Debby moved across the local area, with Debby making
landfall along the Big Bend of Florida on August 5th and tracking
northeast across north Florida and into Southern Georgia through the
day. Isolated to scattered showers and lightning storms often
developed daily through the month. Rainfall picked up towards the
latter part of the month as increased moisture moved into east
central Florida as a frontal boundary situated just north of the
area remained in place for several days before weakening and
dissipating over north Florida. Moist onshore flow continued through
the end of the month, allowing for scattered showers and storms to
form and move onshore and eventually inland.

...Temperatures...

Hot and humid conditions once again prevailed through the month,
with daily average temperatures typically around 1 to 4 degrees
above normal most days. Highs were often in the low to mid 90s with
overnight conditions remaining warm and muggy, as lows typically
ranged in the mid to upper 70s most of the month. Despite the hot
and humid conditions, a few record cool highs were set during the
month during times of increased cloud cover and rainfall. Leesburg
only reached a high of 82 degrees on August 5th, setting a cool
maximum temperature for the date. Additionally, Daytona Beach and
Melbourne both had a high of 83 degrees on the 22nd, which tied the
record cool high for Daytona Beach and broke this record at
Melbourne for the date.

Leesburg, Melbourne and Vero Beach were the only sites to break or
tie record high temperatures for the month, when temperatures
reached in the mid-90s. Muggy conditions overnight led to several
warm minimum temperature records being tied or set across east
central Florida through the month. The most notable of these
occurred on August 7th at Leesburg, Sanford, and Orlando, when the
temperatures at these sites only fell as low as the low 80s. These
values not only broke or tied their warmest minimum temperature on
record for the date, but also set or tied for warmest minimum
temperature on record for the month of August. At Sanford, the low
of 83 degrees on the 7th, was actually the warmest minimum
temperature ever on record at this site, breaking the previous
record of 81 degrees last set on August 10th, 2023.

Warmer than normal conditions led to monthly average temperature
departures that ranged from 0.5 degrees above normal at Sanford to
1.9 degrees above normal at Daytona Beach. This ranked August 2024
within the top 15 warmest at all climate sites. For Daytona, it was
actually the 3rd warmest August on record (tying August 2016) with a
monthly average temperatures of 83.8 degrees. Also of note, August
2024 ranked as 7th warmest on record (tying August 1940) at Fort
Pierce, 8th warmest at Orlando, 9th warmest at Leesburg (tying
August 2013 and 2010), and also 9th warmest at Vero Beach (tying
August 2007).

...Rainfall...

Tropical Cyclone Debby, which became Hurricane Debby before landfall
along the Big Bend of Florida on August 5th, provided a significant
portion of the rainfall for the month across the northern interior
sites. In fact, Leesburg on August 5th received 4.14 inches of rain,
which shattered their previous record of 1.65 inches for the date.
Another notable rainfall record occurred on August 2nd at Sanford,
which had 1.61 inches of rainfall. This broke the previous record of
1.14 inches of rainfall for the date last set in 2002. Tropical
moisture remained over the area for the first week of the month,
providing daily scattered showers and a few lightning storms. A
frontal boundary then approached the Florida peninsula into the
middle of the month, providing moisture south of the boundary over
east central Florida that sparked daily showers and storms. The
front passed through the local area on the 15th and pushed into
South Florida on the 16th. A drier period set in for a few days as
high pressure built in over east central Florida behind the front.
Rainfall than began to pick back up across the local area in the
latter part of the month. This was due to increased moisture south
of another stationary front across northern Florida that pooled over
east central Florida for several days. This moisture allowed
scattered daily showers and storms to occur across the area before
the front weakened and dissipated across north Florida. Higher
moisture remained over central Florida through the end of the month,
allowing for scattered daily showers and storms to form and push
onshore, and moving across the peninsula.

Rainfall for August varied across east central Florida. Totals for
the month were generally near to above normal across the northern
interior, with near to below normal rainfall totals for the rest of
east central Florida. Orlando, Leesburg, and Sanford were all near
to above normal for rainfall, with totals between 7 to 8 inches, or
around 0.1 to 0.5 inches above normal. The lowest totals typically
occurred along the coast, with rainfall totals at Daytona Beach and
Melbourne as low as 3 to 5 inches, which were around 1 to 3 inches
below normal. However, not all coastal locations were drier than
normal, with Vero Beach and Fort Pierce receiving around 7 to 9
inches of rain for the month, which was near to above normal thanks
to the moist onshore flow at the end of the month.
