Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
1158 AM PDT Sun Apr 28 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Warming temperatures, mostly clear skies, and afternoon
breezes expected through Tuesday. Gusty north-northwest winds will
pickup Wednesday across the region with a brief drop in
temperatures. Warming will return heading into the weekend.
&&

.DISCUSSION...Today through next Sunday.

With a trough to our east and a Pacific ridge to our west, the
Desert Southwest rests underneath a dry northwesterly flow aloft.
This flow is conducive for shortwave passages, which will lend to
breezy afternoons through Tuesday. Additionally, increasing heights
over the region will result in increasing temperatures through
Tuesday, with temperatures ranging 5-7 degrees above seasonal
averages Tuesday afternoon.

On Wednesday, an open wave trough will pass through the southeastern
Great Basin, which will increase north-northwest winds across
southern Nevada, southeastern California, and northwestern Arizona.
Winds should remain below advisory levels, though isolated gusts to
40 mph cannot be ruled out in the higher terrain, particularly in
southwestern Nevada. On Thursday, these winds will concentrate along
the Colorado River Valley, resulting in hazardous boating conditions
at Lake Mohave. This "inside slider" will be dry, so no chance of
precipitation expected.

Temperatures will briefly moderate Wednesday and Thursday before
increasing once again going into the weekend underneath rising
heights.

Uncertainty exists in the long term. Ensembles suggest a trough will
move into the western United States next weekend, though details
regarding the strength, location, and speed remain unknown at this
time.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light and diurnal winds today and
overnight, with a 15% chance of speeds reaching 10+ knots between
now and 02z. This evening, when the typical southwest winds kick in,
chance of 10+ knots increases to about 40%. Mostly clear skies with
just a few flat cumulus clouds around 10kft over the high terrain.
Stronger southwest winds develop late tomorrow morning, with gusts
of 20-25 knots expected.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Generally light and diurnal winds at the area TAF sites
today and tonight. Only site where winds over 10 knots are expected
is KDAG, where west winds of 10-20 knots are forecast this evening
and overnight. Otherwise, chances of 10+ knot winds are around 20-
40% at the other airports. VFR conditions persist with just a few
flat cumulus clouds between 8-10kft this afternoon.
