Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
935 PM PDT Wed Sep 13 2017

The first cold front of the Fall season will bring gusty winds
Thursday along with another chance for showers, or even a few
storms north of Highway 50. The cold front will bring much cooler
temperatures Thursday and Friday, with a modest warm up for the
weekend. A stronger front is expected early next week for a chance
of showers, gusty winds, and much below normal temperatures.

Well that was an interesting evening! Two confirmed funnel clouds
(Lake Tahoe waterspout and another near Yerington) and several
other storms exhibiting appreciable rotation. Most of these storms
had rapid growth suggesting some kind of mesoscale boundary or
internal feature helped generate the rotation, since the
environmental shear and hodograph on 0z sounding was rather
sketchy. Instability though at 1260 CAPE was pretty healthy by
Reno standards!

So, we`ve still got some areas of showers and storms in the region
and those will gradually wane as the night goes on. Forcing from
upper low over California is decreasing as that feature moves off
to the east in response to incoming wave over Pac NW. Will
continue isolated showers/storms overnight in the forecast. With
the approaching front, winds tomorrow will be some of the
breeziest we`ve seen in a while, at least outside of summer
storms. Westerly gusts 30-35 mph likely over a large area.

Many areas picked up substantial rainfall today including around
Reno, Sparks, Truckee, Tahoe, Washoe Valley, south of Doyle, and
Nixon to name a few. With this plus skies at least partially
clearing, areas of fog are a good bet by morning. Will mention
this in the forecast as well.
